Travelling to Bangalore from outside India:
One can either fly in directly to Bangalore on an international flight, or fly to another city in India (typically, Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi or Kolkata) and switch to a domestic carrier. Unless there is a great difference in price or the convenience of flight times, or your funding requires you to fly a carrier of a particular country, we strongly recommend the former alternative.
International airlines that fly in directly to Bangalore include Air India, Indian Airlines, Lufthansa, Air France, British Airways, Singapore Airlines, Sri Lankan Airlines, Air Malaysia, Thai Airways and Jet Star Asia. Note that the Lufthansa flight is code-shared with United.
A huge number of international airlines fly in to Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi and Kolkata. Note that Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata are also known as Bombay, Madras and Calcutta, respectively! Unless you are flying Air India, a change in planes at one of these airports on arrival in India will involve going through immigration, collecting your baggage, going from the International Terminal to the Domestic Terminal, and checking in again to the domestic flight. It is wise to leave at least two to three hours for this procedure, especially in Mumbai and Delhi, where the two terminals are separated by a few kilometres, and one has to wait for a (free) shuttle bus between the two terminals (in Chennai and Kolkata, the two terminals are adjacent, and one can walk over). If you do need to take the shuttle bus, look for the signs around the baggage-collection area. The shuttle buses usually leave from within the terminal, and drive across the tarmac; however, occasionally one has to exit the airport and the buses drive city-side. If there is a long queue and you risk missing your connection, tell the person at the door and he will let you jump the queue. You do not need to pay the drivers or baggage handlers, though you may tip them if you wish to (they wear uniforms emblazoned with the slogan: "No Tips"!). Ignore taxi drivers who offer to take you between terminals!
Airlines flying domestic sectors in India include Indian Airlines (now known simply as 'Indian'), Jet Airways, Air Sahara, Kingfisher Airlines, Spice Jet and Air Deccan.
