The research project is focused on understanding the motion of active microscopic swimmers in complex shearing flows, with a specific emphasis on dispersion in porous media. We will begin with examining swimmers in model velocity fields mimicking porous media flows, before moving on to swimmers in actual porous media flows (in the longer term). The objective is to characterize the spatial distribution of swimmers in a model porous medium, and the implications of this distribution for long-time dispersal of micro-swimmer populations The project will begin with detailed simulations, and eventually progress to theoretical modeling based on a multiple scales analysis of the underlying Smoluchowski equation.
