Kushagra Bansal obtained a PhD degree in Microbiology & Cell Biology from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 2010. His doctoral research was focused on the gene regulatory signaling pathways that govern the immune subversive phenotype of macrophages and dendritic cells during pathogenic infections.

Kushagra joined Harvard Medical School, Boston for post-doctoral research in 2011. During his post-doctoral tenure, he sought to delineate the molecular basis of immune tolerance mechanisms that operate in the thymus. 

Kushagra returned to India in 2018 to join Molecular Biology & Genetics unit at Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bangalore, as a new faculty member. He was awarded Ramalingaswami Re-entry Fellowship of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of India and DBT/Wellcome India Alliance Intermediate Fellowship to jump start his research program in India.
