Abstract:
[PDF enclosed]
The vegetation pattern formation phenomenon occurs in resource-limited environments which are widespread around the globe. The response to environmental stress leads to the spatial self-organizing vegetation pattern formation in dryland ecosystems. I will discuss the complex relationship between the spatial self-organization patterns from the population level to the plant community level.
We studied how spatial patterning affects the functional biodiversity of an ecosystem and proposed strategies for maintaining robust ecosystem management services in response to climate extremes. Using a spatiotemporal mathematical model and empirical evidence, I will discuss the underlying driving mechanism of spatial patterns.
Environmental changes can trigger both ecological and evolutionary responses that could stabilize or destabilize ecosystem dynamics. I will discuss the eco-evolutionary dynamics and the ecosystem's response to climate change, which act at different levels of ecosystem organization.
