JNCASR at a glance
The Centre has been actively contributing to the growth of scientific research in the country. Since inception in 1989, we have diversified from our initial focus on research in chemistry and physics of materials to biological and engineering sciences. While the primary focus of our Centre continues to be cutting-edge research both conceptually and technologically, we are also actively engaged in teaching and science outreach activities and also host a wide variety of scientific seminars, workshops and conferences of international standards. We continue to sponsor several programmes that enable Undergraduate and Master’s students as well as teachers from all over the country to experience the joys of research by offering summer research fellowships and visiting fellowships, POCE and POBE
ICMS
ICMS is the first international centre of its kind devoted to high impact, interdisciplinary scientific research, education and extension activity in materials science, established in the confines of a scientific cum educational institution. The Centre was envisaged by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. The plans to establish the Centre got crystallized in 2007, with the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research taking the lead and necessary steps to establish it. The Centre was inaugurated and dedicated to the nation on December 3, 2008 by the Honourable Prime Minister of India - Dr. Manmohan Singh. His Excellency the Governor of Karnataka-Mr. Rameshwar Thakur, Chief Minister- Mr. B. S. Yeddyurappa, and DST Secretary- Dr. T. Ramasami were present.
An important and unique activity of ICMS is to provide global research opportunities and to support international exchange programmes.
