PETRA III

The ring accelerator PETRA III, which is 2304 metres long, is presently one of the world’s most brilliant storage-ring based X-ray sources. It is offering outstanding research prospects for cutting-edge nano and materials science. X-ray sources with electron beam emittances at the diffraction limit which will be a quantum leap in coherent X-ray and imaging applications for in-situ and operando studies of materials and nano-system with molecular precision.

In the frame of the India@DESY Partnership, with the support of the DST Nano Mission, Indian Materials Scientist and the Researcher in DESY in Hamburg are joining forces to tackle the Grand Challenges of our societies in future energy concepts, novel IT systems and health by designing advanced nanomaterials. With its proud legacy of celebrated scientists who made seminal contributions to our current understanding of matter, India today has a vibrant and dynamic scientific community which is highly attractive for a national lab like DESY. DESY offers a world-class research infrastructure, a top-notch scientific profile and a proven record for reliable and efficient cooperation across the world. Right from the inception of this project. It is proposed to have 758 days of beamtime over 5 years.

Applications for beamtime must be submitted electronically through the User Portal of DESY. Each application is assigned to a specific scientific area and is submitted to a Review Committee. Members of these committees are specialists in relevant areas of science

  • A proposal is mainly evaluated based on its scientific merit and technical feasibility of the research plan. You should clearly express what you plan to carry out during the valid term of the proposal.
  • The application will be reviewed based on the description on the form. Please include a full description of the experiment.
  • Only one successful proposal per PI group in a proposal call will be supported for the experiment.

KEK Project

The DST Nano Mission has been supporting Indian Researchers by providing travel and other support to utilize the state-of-the art facility for materials research at KEK Japan. With the cooperation from the Indian Embassy in Tokyo, the project is being implemented.

The Photon Factory is a synchrotron light source facility, as a part of the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK), Japan. The Photon Factory provides one of the four quantum beams (photons, neutrons, muons and positrons) for the Institute of Materials Structure Science (IMSS), which reveal atomic-level structures and electronic structures of all the materials, including living systems.

The Photon Factory has two light source accelerators. The PF ring (2.5 GeV) has been operated since 1982. This is the first dedicated synchrotron light source in Japan, which supply X-rays. Several improvements of accelerator have been made and resulted in a high-brilliant light source. The PF-AR (advanced ring) is a unique light source, that is, high-intensity pulsed synchrotron source which is effective for time resolved experiments. There are around 40 experimental stations at the PF and the PF-AR.

Interested researchers including PhD students can avail the facility. Click here for application and other details
