Introduction

In addition to pursuing research in various contemporary areas, the Centre also has several Science Outreach and Fellowship Programmes for various stakeholders such as students, faculty/scientists and institutions (university/college/school).

For students:

One such flagship activity is the Summer Research Fellowship Programme (SRFP) for young students. Around 2500 students have benefitted from this programme since it’s inception in 1990. Every year around 2000 applications are received, out of which about 150 fellowships are offered. This is one of the highly acclaimed programmes of the Centre and the students are very appreciative of the benefits, enabling them to get inspired towards scientific research during the early stage of their education.

The graduate research internship programme (GRIP) was launched in 2021 for final-year students of B.E/B.Tech/M.Sc/B.S-M.S/MBBS degrees, wherein the students will be able to take up long-term projects under the supervision of JNCASR faculty members. The project should be a part of the final year curriculum of the degree.

Another initiative in promoting scientific research at the undergraduate level are project-oriented programmes in chemistry and biology. The Project Oriented Chemical Education (POCE) and the Project-Oriented Biological Education Programme (POBE) were launched in 2004 and 2006 respectively. Ten meritorious students are selected from across the country for each of these programmes. As part of this, students undertake project work with faculty members of the Centre on small projects during their mid-semester breaks. They also attend special lectures and seminars at the Centre. On completion of their training which lasts for 3 summers, they are issued a Diploma certificate in Chemistry or Biology as the case may be.

With a view to supporting students pursuing various academic programmes starting from undergraduate to Ph.D. to carry out research project work pertaining to their course of study, the centre introduced Short Term Visiting Students Programme(SVSP) and Long Term Visiting Students Programme(LVSP) in 2022.

For Faculty/Scientists:

Apart from these programmes, the Centre also offers Short Term Visiting Faculty Programme(SVFP) and Long Term Visiting Faculty Programme(LVFP) in 2022 to faculty members working in educational institutions and scientists working in  R & D laboratories, to work with the faculty of the Centre. This program has been of great benefit to a large number of young researchers as they are able to hone their skills or develop research facilities in their parent establishment after undergoing training and research in the Centre.

For institutions:

We also invite institutions like schools, colleges and other educational organizations to visit the centre through the institutional visits program.

The Centre also organizes workshops for teachers and students of schools for popularizing science. The Centre, through Educational Technology Unit, is actively involved in the concept, production and development of multimedia CD-ROMs especially for school students and teachers in various disciplines of science. The content has also been developed in vernacular languages for science popularization programs in various parts of the country.
