Title: Identifying Structural Signature of Dynamical Heterogeneity via the Local Softness Parameter

Abstract:
The origin of dynamic heterogeneity (DH) in supercooled liquids is a topic of intense research [1-3]. It is often suggested that, similar to crystals, structural defects in supercooled liquids contribute to DH. However, identifying these structural defects is a nontrivial challenge [4].
We utilize the softness of a mean field caging potential, developed in our previous work [5,6], as an order parameter to capture structural heterogeneity. Our findings indicate that the lifetime of this softness parameter aligns with the lifetime of the cage [7]. Moreover, we predict that the local softness and local dynamics exhibit a causal relationship, where decreasing temperature enhances the correlation between structure and dynamics.
This study reveals that lower temperatures lead to an increase in structural heterogeneity. As the structure becomes a more effective predictor of dynamics, the degree of DH consequently increases.
