journey of Professor C N R Rao
These galleries give us a glimpse of the factors that have shaped Bharat Ratna Professor C.N.R. Rao FRS, the internationally renowned Indian scientist. They display some of the highlights of his remarkable personal and professional journey.
Professor Rao has been widely acclaimed for his landmark discoveries in the field of solid-state and materials chemistry, which have been recognized by his having been awarded some of the most prestigious international and national prizes and honours. He is also known as a shaper of science policy and an Institution builder, having been largely responsible for transforming several scientific centres in India, including the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, and creating the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bengaluru. He is instrumental in starting the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs).
This gallery displays the various honours that Professor C.N.R. Rao has received. He has got over 80 Honoris Causa (honorary) doctorates from several national and international universities. International accolades he has I received include the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star (Japan), Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur (France), Commander of the Order of Rio Branco & Order of Scientific Merit, Grand Cross (Brazil) and Order of Friendship (Russia). These medals, the diploma of the Dan David prize (Israel), replicas of the Hughes Medal, the Royal Medal and the Marlow Medal can also be viewed here.
The two special displays are: his response representing the Fellows of the Royal Society on the occasion of its 350th anniversary, delivered in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II, and the letter from Professor C.V. Raman inviting Professor Rao to become a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences.
